The show – entitled Duplex and running until 25 September – captures da Cunha's engagement with cultures of consumption, recycling, materiality and art history, featuring his distinctive use of ready-made materials including park benches, umbrellas, cement mixers and beach towels.
Using complex and subtle processes, da Cunha transforms our perception of often humble materials - so cotton becomes marble, mops become tapestry, construction tools take on the resonance of mysterious relics.
As a preview to the exhibition, Alexandre da Cunha will be in conversation with curator Jenni Lomax on Friday 6 August, 4-6pm at Brighton CCA.
Now living and working in São Paulo and London, Alexandre da Cunha received his MA from London's Chelsea College of Art in 2000, and also studied at the Royal College of Art.
