Working as volunteers for the fan-led Raise The Flag initiative during the day inside Wembley Stadium, the students helped to prepare commemorative displays ahead of the arrival of all surviving members of the 1966 winning World Cup side.
After the work was done, they took their seats to watch Harry Kane score a hat-trick in England’s 7-0 win over Montenegro to secure qualification for UEFA 2020 European Championships.
“It was an eye-opening experience,” said Owen Evans, Sport Journalism BA(Hons) course leader. “As well as reporting on high-profile games, our students also critically study issues such as national identity and fandom in English football, so this unique behind-the-scenes perspective of an historic fixture was invaluable.”
